The Heart of Evangelism

November 24, 2009

Guest:  Dr. Alvin Reid

After the ascension of Jesus Christ from the grave, Holy Scripture states that he gathered the disciples on a mountain and said these words – “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and makes disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Termed the Great Commission by the church, various means and methods have been used since that time centuries ago when Jesus departed the earth. In the modern day, evangelism is debated as to its most effective means for taking the gospel to the nations. The gospel itself seems clouded and is often expanded to include ideas and statements which, when examined Biblically, seem strange and even out of place from the words preached and taught by Jesus and the Apostles.

Guest for this podcast:

Dr. Alvin Reid, Professor of Evangelism and Student Ministry occupying the Bailey Smith Chair of Evangelism at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC has written a new book, The Evangelism Handbook: Biblical, Spiritual, Intentional, Missional.

The Faith: What It Is and Is Not

November 5, 2009

Guests: Chuck Colson and Timothy George

Evangelicals are Christians closely associated with the Christian evangel – or the gospel. Of late, the very word “gospel” has become somewhat vogue in various discussions by such diverse groups as the Emergent Village, the National Association of Evangelicals, and the Gospel Coalition. What is meant by the term gospel, however, seems to be unclear. For some, it is an activist word void of doctrinal moorings which only cause divisions among Christians. Others understand the gospel as a series of propositions gleaned from the pages of the Bible and presented as truth to the world. What is the gospel and what is the faith of Christians as found in the Bible?

For a nation such as the United States with such monetary wealth and resources there seems to be a dearth of Christian doctrine – what Jude termed in Holy Scripture as “the faith once for all delivered to the saints.”

Guests for this podcast:

Chuck Colson – a name synonymous with evangelicals for over thirty years is the founder of Prison Fellowship and other evangelical organizations such as Justice Fellowship and the Wilberforce Forum. He has worked to advance the gospel and the local church in ways which call the church toward a sound doctrinal footing and an outreach that seeks to impact the culture in ways which adorn the gospel with deeds done in the name of Christ.

Timothy George – another name familiar to evangelicals serves as the founding dean of Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham, AL and Senior Editor of Christianity Today. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Prison Fellowship occupying a place where the late Carl F.H. Henry served with distinction for many years. He is the author of numerous books and is perhaps most widely known for what has become a modern Christian classic – The Theology of the Reformers.

‘Emerging’ Southern Baptists: The ECM comes to Nashville

November 5, 2009

Guests: Gregory Thornbury, Mark Devine, Micah Fries, Justin Wainscott

Modern church life can be downright confusing. Just when one movement or fad has peaked in evangelical life, another comes to take its place and often leads in an entirely different direction. These days differences are pronounced and becoming more so with each passing year.

Terms such as Emergent and Emerging; Modern and Post-Modern; Missional and Attractional; are converging on local congregations not seen since the days of the Reformation when Christian doctrine is being re-examined.

What exactly is the Emerging Church Movement? What is the Emergent Village? Who are some of the key leaders influencing evangelicals today? Is the Southern Baptist Convention feeling the effect of emerging winds which are blowing through SBC churches? Are those who identify with the Emerging Church Movement heretics intent only on corrupting Christian doctrine and creating havoc in local churches?

Guests for this podcast:

Dr. Mark Devine serves as the Associate Professor of Divinity at Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham, AL. He has performed extensive research on the Emergent Village and the Emerging Church Movement.

Dr. Gregory Thornbury, Dean of the School of Christian Studies at Union University has studied the philosophical roots of the trends impacting the modern church and the culture.

Micah Fries serves as the Senior Pastor of the Frederick Blvd. Baptist Church in St. Joseph, MO. He is an influential blogger in and beyond the Southern Baptist Convention.

Justin Wainscott – Teaching pastor at the First Baptist Church of Paducah, KY – a more traditional congregation with a changing demographic of members.
